Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis – Chapter 1: The Law of Nature

Any time I take a road trip, I make sure to download a good audio book for the drive.  In my jaunt from Austin to The Woodlands today, I finished listening to Mere Christianity. Whoa.

People that are close to me have listened to the many revelations this book is opening up for me.  It’s seriously blowing my mind.  I’m excited to be creating a video series from this book to share with y’all.  It will help me to learn and internalize it better by trying to explain and discuss it.  If you’ve read it, please share your thoughts!

In the attached video, I am reading a few excerpts and sharing my thoughts about the first chapter of Mere Christianity, titled…

The Law of Nature

“…because people thought that ever one knew it by nature and did not need to be taught it.”

There is something inside of us that wants to have character and integrity.  We all have it that desire to be a “good person”.  And there are some things that are universally undesirable.

Selfishness has never been admired.

In the video I wonder about the above statement.  I think I understand the point he is making but…

Is selfishness is admired in America?
In any case,

“…we have failed to practice ourselves the kind of behavior we expect from other people.”

Ouch.  That’s a burn.  Guilty.  Done it.

“It is only our bad temper that we put down to being tired or worried or hungry; we put our good temper down to ourselves.”

Aww, man… that one is me too.  You do not want to be around me when I’m really hungry.

CS rounds out the chapter by making clear…

“First, that human beings, all over the earth, have this curious idea that they ought to behave in a certain way, and cannot really get rid of it.  Secondly, that they do not in fact behave that way.”

Love it.  So honest.  So true.  Are you ready for Chapter 2?

Thanks for reading and watching.  Let me know what you’re thinking in the comments below.
