That Time We Had A Staycation in Merida Because I Missed My Flight

I can’t believe I missed my flight.

I mean… I can.

Because I have a history of losing things.

This time, I lost my passport.ย  And by lost, I mean misplaced.ย  Found the next day on under the scanner lid.ย  But not recovered in time to use the non-refundable ticket to Cuba.

Ok, change of plans.ย  And don’t cry.ย  Cuba’s not going anywhere.

Staycation Merida, Yucatan.

So I rented a car and decided to make the best of things.ย  On Friday, I ran errands #adulting during the day and took Austin out for dinner that night at Amore e Gusto, which I highly recommend.

 

We love dog friendly beach restaurants.

On Saturday, we went to Progreso.ย  We valet parked at Crabster and spent the day at one of their tables on the beach.

Austin is getting better.ย  Though there is still plenty of room for improvement.

In us all, I suppose.

[Progreso, Yucatรกn] Of course I would have a dog that doesn’t like to take photos. ??โ€โ™€๏ธ? This is the best of the 5 snaps I asked my waiter to take of us. ? @dogfriendlyyucatan is the first dog that I ever adopted versus raising from a small puppy. It has really made me think a lot about how our experiences shape us. Maybe it sounds corny, but I’m learning so much just by watching Austin evolve. ??? When I first met him, I began to wonder if I #adopted a not-smart dog as he was constantly staring at walls and absolutely clueless about affection. His previous life was different. Turns out, loving on him and talking to him and even disciplining him has made him so much more of a pleasure to be around. Give us another 6 months together and we’ll be ready for the cover of @yucataninsider magazine. ???

Everyone Blows Leaving Progreso

Luckily, I decided to be super responsible at Crabster by stopping after one delicious piรฑa colada because to my surprise, I was required to blow in a breathalizer when I tried to leave the beach town.ย  Whaa?

So.ย  Definitely have a designated driver when visiting because…

And then I took Austin to Paseo Montejo for a bike ride, but we couldn’t find a basket big enough for his booty.

So we followed the jazz music to Rosas y Xocolate patio where I had brunch and Austin watched all the activity on the street.

Good boy.ย  Take it easy.

Renting the car was a really good idea.ย  I don’t really enjoy driving but now I know I need to buy one if I expect to keep my sanity.ย  Some cities like Chicago in the United States or Guadalajara in Mexico- I got along quite well without a car. But you really need one in Merida.

Without a car, you pay for it when Uber adds up quickly.ย  Or you pay for it with your time walking in the hot sun- or taking a pretty outdated public transportation system.

So, after some holiday travels, I’ll start looking.ย  After all, if I am going to be the bestย Yucatan Insider I can be- I gotta cover a lot more ground.
